Voinyk

Dictionary meaning

The name 'Voynik' originates from Slavic tradition. It is formed using the suffix -ik from the name Voin, which itself may have arisen from the dual-based name Voinyegъ. This form of the name Voynik is recorded in the Registers of the Zaporozhian Army twice, though in the variants Vujnik and Vunik (Ostash Ind. 513).It is also possible that the name Voynik comes directly from the Ukrainian word 'vojnyk', meaning 'warrior' (Dictionary of Ukrainian Language XVI-XVII centuries 4/191). Although the name Voynik was not widespread, it has given rise to several derived surnames. For example, in 1404, a gentleman named Mykola Voynytsky was recorded in the town of Medyka (SSUM I 187); in 1433, Domarat Voynytsky was noted in the village of Lanchytsia; in 1437, a Petro Vonytsky was documented in Kyiv; and in 1664, a gentleman named Jan Voynytsky was mentioned in the village of Varadka in Transcarpathia (Yavor 204). In 1495, in the Moldovan town of Vaslui, the surname Voynik was evidenced with the formant -ul: “son Staninou and his nephews Dobroinou Voynykoul" (SSUM I 187). In 1649, Ivan Voynychenko is noted in the Bila Tserkva regiment (RVZ 184).Among Poles, the name Wojnic has been recorded since the mid-14th century (SSNO VI 175).
