Name «Smyrenka»

Smyrenka is a Slavic feminine personal name that has at least two etymological interpretations. First, it is a Ukrainian name derived from the adjective "pokirlyvyy" (meaning "humble" or "submissive") by adding the substantivizing suffix "-ka." Secondly, it may originate from the Bulgarian or Croatian feminine name Smyrena in its diminutive form, which in Ukrainian means "submissive." Bulgarian names often carry meanings of blessings, so "Smyrena" can be considered a blessing name, which can be interpreted as "may she be submissive!" (Kovachev 475). The only known example of the name in written form dates back to 1615: Smyrenka - a peasant from Ustyuzhno Polye (Tup 463).
