Polian

Dictionary meaning

The name "Polian" is an ancient Slavic monolithic personal name. Its etymological meaning is possibly linked to the terms "poliana" or "pole" (field). It may also preserve a memory of the medieval name of the southern Rus' tribe of Polyans or even one of the tribal names of the Poles. The personal name "Polian" is used not only by Ukrainians but also by Poles and Bulgarians. In Polish-Latin sources, the name "Polian" has been widely recorded since the 14th century. For example, in 1387, there is a record of "Miczo Polan."In Ukraine, the name "Polian" is first attested in Latin documents of the late Middle Ages written in Latin on the southern slopes of the Carpathians. For instance, in a record from 1358 from the Zemplin County, there are mentions of "Roiuap filio Synka" and "Polyan procurator."In a Ukrainian text written in Lviv in 1399, the lexeme "polyany" is used in an ethnic sense, particularly in the phrase: "there were many good people among the Polyans and Rus'."Additionally, in 1448 in an Old Ukrainian text written in the city of Suceava, the lexeme "Polian" has ambiguous semantics: it may be connected with an anthroponym in a record from 1715: Laur. Polyanka - the village of Dovhe.Consequently, the name "Polian" not only signifies "glade" or "field," but it also has historical roots connected to tribes and ethnic groups.
