Khotko

Dictionary meaning

The name 'Khotko' is a diminutive, derived through truncation and the addition of suffixes from the two-root Slavic names, such as Khotimir or Khotislav. In Ukrainian written records, this name has been documented since the 15th century. The earliest mentions of Khotko date back to 1469: "Khotko" (Tup 473); in 1564: "Khotko Zarubich" – a peasant from Lyuboml (Arch YZR VIII/2 238); and another mention in 1564: "Chotko Layowicz" (LRS 280); in 1565 – "Khotko Makhnovych" – a peasant from Ratne (the same source). Additionally, in 1484, there is a recorded patronymic: "Pan Ivashko Khotkovych" – the voivode of Kyiv (Tup 809) and the modern surname "Khotkevych" in Kharkiv region (Redyko 1132).Furthermore, in Ukraine, there is a village called Khycha, which in Slovak sounds like Chotća. This settlement is mentioned in the Prešov district of Slovakia as early as 1408 (Regional Studies Dictionary 486). In Poland, the name Khotko has been known since the late 14th century, specifically in 1399: "Stanislaus, kmetho dictus Chotko de Strzelce" (SSNO 1335).
