Hoshko

Dictionary meaning

Hoshko is a Ukrainian diminutive name formed with the suffix "-ko" from the Slavic shortened name Hosh. This name is recorded in the Galician toponym Hoshiv, as well as in surnames such as Hosh and Hoshovsky. Among Ukrainian peasants in the Galicia and Lviv regions of the 15th century, this name also corresponded to the named variant Gosz. For example, in 1561, serfs named Hoszko are mentioned, including Vasko and Tymko in the villages of Sianik and Rokosovo, and in 1648, serfs Hosko Dmet and Hoskovich Ivan from the village of Holubyne are recorded. In 1678, a serf named Hasik Fedur from the village of Rakhiv is mentioned. There is an opinion that among South Slavs and Czechs, the corresponding names include Hhostymyr, Dragoslav, and Holub, although it is also emphasized that the Ukrainian name Gotko could be derived from the Bulgarian diminutive Gotko, which is a diminutive of the full calendar name Georgiy.
