Dats_1

Dictionary meaning

The name "Dats" is attested in the monuments of Ukrainian writing only from the 16th century. For example, records show names like Dacz Olexicz and Dacz Pachuticz. In the 17th and 18th centuries, patronymics formed from the name Dats, such as Chwedecz Daczevich and Datsenko Petro - a resident of the village of Bila Tserkva. In 1649, five Zaporozhian Cossacks were recorded under the name Dats.Today, the name Dats is still used in the southern part of Tyachivshchyna (Zakarpattia) as a colloquial equivalent of the official name Andriy. Compared to other languages, in Bulgarian there are names such as Daca, Daco, and Dace, in Croatian - Daca, Daco, and in Old Polish - Dadz.Regarding the etymology of the name, opinions vary. Most likely, it is a truncated-suffixed formation of a calendar name starting with "Da-", similar to Danilo, Darius, or Dasiy, or it may be a result of the distortion of names that contain the sound "d," such as Bohdan or Yordan. Another version suggests that it is a truncated variant of the Old Slavic or Old Polish two-root name Daczbogius, recorded in 1482. The East Slavic and Ukrainian equivalent is the anthroponym or theonym Dazhboh or Daiboh. A possible intermediate stage to the variant name Dats could be the record Dadzbog or the voiced Daczbog, as in a record from 1414 in the village of Dobriany. It can also be compared with the Polish personal name Dadzko from the 13th century. The idea of the origin of the name Dadzko through a truncated-suffixed formation from the two-root Polish name Dadzibog, meaning Dazhboh, is also supported by researchers.
