The personal name Chakan is a newer phonetic variant of the name Chekan. It continues the form of the passive participle "chekan," meaning 'expected,' 'awaited' (ESSJA 4, 36).
In the 15th century, in the Transcarpathian village of Petrovo, the nobleman Csakan is already mentioned (Szabó 449), and in 1605, a serf named Jo. Cziokan was recorded in the village of Dragovo (Belay 168). In 1618, the anthroponym Csakan Fedur is documented in the village of Kapyshova near Prešov (Novak 69). In 1648, the anthroponym Csakan Jaczko appears in the village of Zhdenyovo (Maksay 608). In 1649, a Cossack of the Kyivan regiment named Tymosh Chekanovsky is mentioned (RVZ 298). In 1699, a phonetically Magyarized anthroponym Csakany Mikita is recorded in the town of Svaljava (Maksay 570).
