Name «Chekan»

The personal name Chekan is a local equivalent of the Dnipro-region name Zhdan. It has been recorded in documents when the personal name Chekan and its derivatives were already functioning as surname designations. For example, in 1606, the name Ivan Chekanyak was documented in the village of Folvark (Lel Pam 226); in 1649, the Cossack of the Kaniv regiment Ivan Chekanenko (RVZ 124); in 1650, Trokhym Chekanenko (Arch YZR VI/1 570); in 1699, Csekan Stephan in the village of Yalove (Maksay 607).
