Name «Brechka»

The name 'Brechka' can have several meanings. According to R. Ostash, it is "the individual surname of the Cossack Brechka Semyanenko," and is associated with the Ukrainian dialect word 'brechka,' which can mean 'wild buckwheat' or 'honey drink' (Yavorsky 51). However, Ostash also notes that it may be a proper name in its own right (Ostash 13).From our perspective, 'Brechka' could be a shortened-suffix variant of the full Slavic name 'Bryachislav.' This name is mentioned in the index of Y. Svoboda's work on page 260 as 'Vhes(i),' and 'Vhes(i)' corresponds to the Czech verb 'brečeti,' which means 'to cry' (Svoboda 48, 72).
