Bilets

Dictionary meaning

**Name: Bilets**

Bilets is an ancient Slavic male personal name that is confirmed by written records in all Slavic languages. For example, in Serbian sources from the 14th century, the name Bѣlac is mentioned, which, according to M. Grković, originates from the adjectival root bѣl- (white) and the suffix -ьць. This suffix is also represented in names such as Halcyts, Grubets, Lyuba, Mylets, and Radets.

The use of the male name Bilets in the Slovene language is confirmed by records from 14th-century written sources from the city of Trieste, and Croatian onomastics (name researchers) link it to the names Bela and Belimir.

In medieval Poland, both the variant Bilets and the variant Bileć are attested. In Ukraine, the name Bilets has not been recorded. Only the surname Bilets is documented in relation to the name Ivan, for example, in documents from 1682 from the village of Zahorb, as well as the patronymic from it — Biletsky, recorded in 1661 in the village of Ruska, and the patronymic Biletsky, noted in the village of Tekovo in 1775.

Additionally, there are observations that the name Bilets was used in the Pridnestrovian region, Maramureș, and along the middle Tisza River in the 14th-15th centuries. For instance, records of the name Byltsu from Moldova and the modern surname Bilets in Ukrainian Zakarpattia confirm its existence in these regions.
