The oldest record of the name "Zhytets" originates from the Middle Tisa basin in 1213: filios Sacicuet Syteci - the village of Ban in the Krasna County (RegVar 180). There is also a distorted record of this name from 1455: "и па<д>инаего о(т) Жицѣ" (to be read as "from Zhytets!") - the city of Suceava (SSUM I 361). The name is derived using the suffix -ьць from one of the dual-root names following the model of Zhyteslav or Boryzhyt, Tykhozhyt, and others. There is also a single-morpheme Slavic personal name Żitb, which was used in the Czech language and in some other Slavic languages. Today, the surname Zhytetskyi is widely spread.
