Zhasko

Dictionary meaning

The personal name Zhasko is already attested in medieval graffiti of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kyiv: "Putko wrote with Zhasko" (SNSK table 111, p. 448). It also appears in the name of the village Zhaskovychy, less frequently - Zhashkovychy, located in the Volhynian land as of 1452 (SSUM I 355), as well as in the record of the name of the village Zhaskovychy, which is documented in the Peremyshl land as of 1361 (SSUM I 335; Humecka 13-15). Furthermore, the existence of the name Zhasko is also confirmed by the record of the anthroponym Zhaskovskyi from 1476: "...sold to Lord Volchko Zhaskovskyi" (ibid.). The personal name Zhasko is also mentioned in the Register of the Zaporozhian Host from 1649 (Ostash Ind. 514).Outside the Ukrainian-speaking area, the personal name Zhasko has not been found. We believe that the ancient Ukrainian name Zhasko was formed using the diminutive suffix -ko from the bi-root personal name Jaslav. However, it is also possible that it is based on the verb "zhastaty/zhahaty" (to frighten, to scare) or the adjective "zhaskyi" (terrible), meaning that it could have been synonymous with the nicknames Strashko and Opudalo.
