Zavyd

Dictionary meaning

The name Zavyd presumably has a Proto-Slavic origin. It is derived from the prefixal verb "zaviditi" (to envy). Earlier, the name was known to all Slavs, and according to D. Bohdan, parents gave it to their child so that no one would envy her, that is, harbor jealousy. According to M. Hrković, it is a protective name that parents gave to their child to ensure that she would not be harmed by evil forces. M. Hudash and M. Demchuk offer their interpretation, suggesting that the name comes from the unrecorded Slavic name *za-ne-vidъ.In Rus', the name Zavyd is already attested in the 12th century. For example, in 1169, Zavid is mentioned as a Kyiv boyar of Volodymyr Sviatoslavych. In the 13th century, specifically in 1220, it is recorded in the protocols of the so-called "God's courts" as impetitor Zavidade villa Chrvat, praenominatus Zavid, renunciavit causae suae - the Komitat of Silad. In 1428, the name Zavyd was even used among Tatars. In 1448, it appears in the city of Suceava in the text "cheledi ciganskikh na imya Vlad, Latska i Zavyd...", and in 1453, the personal name Zavyd is mentioned among the names Nanuł and Alex. Among the Zaporozhian Cossacks in 1649, there was the surname Zavydko. In Zakarpattia, the village of Zavidovo has been functioning since the 15th century, with the Hungarian record Zavidfalva from 1466. In Ukraine and other Slavic countries, several surnames (Davyidovych, Zavidivskyi, Zavidniak) and many toponyms have been formed from this name. For instance, the earliest written mention of the village Zawidowicze from Lviv region also dates back to 1466, as well as references to the villages of Zavydivka, Zavydovychi, and Zavydne. The name was also known among the Czechs.
