The name Yudyt is derived from the Greek Ιουδιθ, which comes from the Hebrew יְהוּדִית meaning "woman from Judea." In the Old Testament, Judith is a Jewish woman who saved Judea from an Assyrian invasion. In Orthodox tradition, she is not considered canonical, but is recognized by Catholics (Saint Judith of Prussia), as well as by Jews and Protestants.
