The name Vytan is a suffix-based formation from the name Bum. In modern Ukraine, the name Vytan is hardly used, yet historical records show its existence as early as 1209 in Galicia, notably in the surname of the nobleman Yuriy Vytanovych. In Poland, the name Witan appears in records from the 15th century. Today, the masculine name Vytan, as well as the feminine Vytana, is used by Bulgarians, Serbs, and Croats. It is believed that the name Vytan is derived from the same root Bum- found in the names Vytomyr and Vytoslav. However, the origin of this root is a subject of debate. Most likely, it conveys the meaning 'master'.
