Vorocha

Dictionary meaning

The name 'Vorocha' is an East Slavic (full vowel) truncated-suffix masculine name that originated from the bi-basic name Vyrotislav or Vyrotimir, which contains the verbal root "vorotiti" (to return, to turn, to spin) and the suffix -cha(t). The name Vorona is reflected in the surname of the Dnipro Cossack Vorona, as well as in a record about a serf from the village of Perechyn in Transcarpathia from 1728: "Eiiе Vorotha" (Consultation record of the fiscal administration of Hungary, September 28, 1728). The name is also found in the patronymic Hrynya Voronovych, recorded in 1542.The root of the personal name is preserved in the name of the Transcarpathian village Vornovo, which is first mentioned in 1522 in a Hungarian record as Vorocso, as well as in the modern name of the field Voronans'ke, located in the villages of Yabluniv and Zaluzh in the Mukachevo district. There is also a record of the village name from 1607 — the family Vorotnicza, which originates from the former village of Vorotnytsia, near the village of Hrybivtsi. Thus, the verbal anthropo-root "vorotiti" in Transcarpathia is indeed ancient and traditional.
