Vlaiko

Dictionary meaning

The name "Vlaiko" is a phonetic variation of the South Slavic masculine names Vladko and Vladyko, which derive from the full two-root name Volodymyr. Modern variations of the name Vlaiko, Vlajo, and Vlaika are used in countries such as Bulgaria, Serbia, and Croatia. A record from Moldova dated 1464 contains the phrase: “na to yest vi̇ra pana Stanchoula, vi̇ra pana Vlaika, ouika nashego” from the city of Suceava. In Transcarpathia, the name Vlaiko was first mentioned in 1435 in the village of Dibrivka, among other names such as Gavrilo and Mykhailo. The documents of that time recorded the form Vlajko. The name Vlaiko also appears in several Polish-Latin medieval documents. For example, in 1437 it was recorded: “Onaczko, filius Vlayko de Drohomirczani; Nobilis Vlayko,” and in 1427: “Hyra Vlayko.” Furthermore, there was the name Vlaikoł, which belonged to a Moldavian boyar and the starost of Khotyn, mentioned in a document from the 15th century.
