The name Volodymyr has an ancient Church Slavonic form and consists of two roots: the voiceless verb "vladěti," which means "to possess," and the nominal root "mirŭ," whose original meaning is "peace" or "world." This name is first mentioned in Rus in the 10th century in parallel forms such as Volodymer and Vladimer. In the Ukrainian lands, the voiceless variant of the name Volodymyr was primarily used by Vlachs, Bulgarians, and Russians, and over time, it was also adopted by Czechs and Slovaks. In the 15th century, in the Ukrainian Carpathians, surname forms Volodymyr and Ladomyr were recorded, traditionally localized in areas of ancient Valians colonization. Interestingly, there is a Ukrainian village named Ladomiriv in Eastern Slovakia, which is also related to this name. One cannot forget Prince Rostyslav Volodymyrovych, who in 1083 was often referred to as Volodymyr or Volodar.
