The name "Verkhuslava" has ancient Slavic origins. It is derived from the male equivalent "Verkhoslav," which consists of the root "verkh-" (meaning "summit") and "-slava," connected by the interfix (connecting morpheme) "-u-." The earliest recorded person with the name Verkhuslava in Ruthenia was the daughter of Prince Vsevolod Mstislavich, whose life dates back to 1136. She was married to the great Polish prince Boleslaw the Curly. In 1180, a woman named Verkhuslava-Anastasia is mentioned as the wife of Rostislav Rurikovich, and in 1225, a princess named Rostislavlya also bore the name Verkhuslava. In Poland, the feminine name "Wierzchosława" became known in the 13th century, while the masculine equivalent "Wierzchosław" dates back to the 12th century. Currently, the name Verkhuslava is not widespread in either Ukraine or Poland.
