The origin of the name "Ulib" is unclear. The earliest written mentions date back to the 10th - 12th centuries. One of the first references is from the year 945: "Ulib" in Volodyslavl – a personal name belonging to Igor Rurikovich. Another mention dates to 1146: "Ulib" is referenced as a boyar and thousand-man in Kyiv.
