The name Torchyn has its origin in the ancient East Slavic ethnonym "torchyn," to which the Slavic suffix -yn is added. In Kyivan Rus', this name was used to denote a part of the Turkic neighbors. The earliest mention of this name dates back to the early 11th century. For example, in 1015, a cook named Torchyn is mentioned (IL 95; LL 433; Tup 398). In 1100, the name Torchyn was used by the Chernihiv boyar David and Oleg Sviatoslavich (LL 264; IL 180; Tup 398; LR 155).
