The name 'Terpylo' is a truncation-suffix formation derived from a two-root name such as 'Terpymyr' or 'Terpyslav' using the suffix '-ilo'. It first appears in a record from 1582 about a nobleman named Terpylo Mykhailo from the city of Zhytomyr. This name is also recorded in the surname of a registered Cossack from 1649, Ivan Terpylo. Additionally, this name is reminiscent of the andro-nyms (male names) of the literary character Terpylykh, which Ivan Petrovych Kotliarevskyi used to name the mother of Natalka Poltavka.
