The Slavic name "Svat" is a nickname that originates from the term of kinship and means 'father of the daughter-in-law' or 'brother of the son-in-law'. The name was first recorded in written documents in 1337: "domus Johannes dicti Zuuafry" - the city of Mikhailivtsi in eastern Slovakia. In the Transylvanian village of Or, in the Szatmár County, a serf named Zovat is mentioned in 1549. In the 18th century, the surname Svadeba was also recorded in the Uzhanshchyna and Perechynshchyna regions, which was popular, as it is today.
