The earliest records of the name "Sulym" date back to the 17th century. For instance, a Cossack from the Kalnytskyi regiment, Sulym Semenienko, was mentioned in 1649. At that time, the word "Sulym" was already frequently used as a surname. In the records of 1649, several Cossacks with the surname "Sulym" appeared, including Fedor Sulym from the Bilotserkivskyi regiment and Petro Sulym from the Cherkaskyi regiment. In 1666, sources mention Havrylo Sulym. In Halytska Lemkivshchyna, surnames containing the root "Sul-" such as Sulyk, Sulym, Sulymczyk, Sulicz, and Sulko were already quite common by 1783. It is also noted that the Poles had the name "Sulim" as early as 1065.
