Stoian

Dictionary meaning

Stoyan is a traditional Slavic name that is most beloved and celebrated by Macedonians, Serbs, and Bulgarians. Its origin is derived from the verb "stojati" (to stand) and the suffix "-apъ". The original semantics of the name suggest a protective wish: "May he remain alive!". The very idea of endowing a name with protective function, according to V. Budzhishevska, was introduced to the Balkan Slavs by Turkic or Mongolian peoples, and thanks to the Bulgarians, it spread to the entire Slavic north. The earliest records of this name in Ukrainian territories date back to the 14th century. For example, in 1370 a nobleman was mentioned as "Jo. dictus Stoyan kenesius"; in 1404, the pan Prochelnik Stoyan in the town of Kamianets; in 1420, the nobleman Stoyan de Krichfalva; and in 1442, the pan Sava Stoyan. There is also a patronymic from 1366: the pan Navouy Stoyansky in the town of Peremyshl. In the following centuries, the anthroponym "Stoyan" unequivocally began to serve as a surname. For example, in 1649, Semen Stoyan, a Cossack of the Myrhorod Regiment.
