The name "Stavko" has definitively Slavic origins, although its original meaning has not yet been established. It is believed that this name is derived from the verb "stavaty" (to become). The earliest records of this name date back to 1069: Stavko Gordyatyč - a Kyiv boyar, commander of Izyaslavich (LР 458); 1096: "Stawk Skordjatić" (Skulina II 218). Additionally, there are newer Latin-Polish records of its related forms from 1369: Lassotha dictus Stavisina - city of Kyiv (SSNO V 204); 1361: pan Verbota Stavyshyn in Sudomir (Tup 760). More examples can be found in fragmentary texts included in the Dictionary of Old Polish Personal Names (SSNO V 202 - 204).
