Name «Rubets»

The word "rubets" is used in the meanings of "fold in clothing" or "scar on the body." O. Selishchev suggests a theory that "Rubets" may originate from the verbs "rubaty" or "rubity." However, it is more likely that this name is an ancient Slavic variation of the name "Hrubets." This name has been preserved among Serbs in the form "Hrubac."The name "Rubets" may have originated from the adjective "hrubyi," with the initial meaning of "thick person." It is worth noting that the loss of the sound /y/ in the combination /h r/ is a result of the influence of neighboring languages, particularly Hungarian, where such changes are a common phenomenon.The name "Rubets" became known in the territories of Ukraine and Belarus quite late. For example, in 1552, a document mentions Rubets Markovich in the city of Mozir, and in 1715 – serfs named Rubets Ivan and Hrubets Ivan in the village of Mizhhirya.
