Rado

Dictionary meaning

Radyо is a colloquial variant of the name Rado, characterized by the suffix -yo. Its earliest Ukrainian records date back to the 16th-17th centuries. For instance, in 1577, the surname Ragia was recorded in the village of Fanchikovo, in 1620 – the surname Ragio in the village of Borzhavske, and in 1787 – the name Ragy in the city of Vinogradiv. There are also similar Ukrainian variants of colloquial calendar names, such as Vanyo, Lesyo, and Fedyо. In Poland, anthroponyms resembling Radyо have been documented since the 15th century, such as Radzio and Radyo. From such names, patronymics were formed, as seen in 1649, when a Cossack from the Kalnytsky regiment was named Ilyash Radenko, and a Cossack from the Bilocherkivskyi regiment was named Ivan Radyuka.
