The name "Pupets" (genitive case - Pupetsa) likely originates from the anatomical term "pupets," which means 'belly button' or from the botanical term "pupets," used to refer to plants such as ice plant or saxifrage (according to the ESUM 4,635). In 1649, among 40,000 Zaporizhian Cossacks, the name Pupets is found with a Cossack from the Bratslav regiment named Pupets Melnyk (according to RVZ 240).It is also worth noting that in Ukraine, surnames from the 17th-18th centuries with the root "Pup-" are known, such as: Pup, Pupyna, Pupynovych, Pupko, Pupо.
