Name «Pochai»

The name "Pochai" originates from the toponym of the Drohobych region in the Lviv Oblast, Pochayovychy, which was documented in writing as early as 1409. Today, this settlement is officially known as Pochayevychi. According to researcher M. Hudash, the basis of this toponym could have been a three-component personal name like *Po[zna]chai or Po[zde]chai. Over time, the second component of this name was reduced, leading to the formation of the two-component anthroponym "Pochai." If this hypothesis is correct, after truncation, only the root of the verb "chaiaty," which translates to "to wait," remained.
