Ozymko

Dictionary meaning

**Ozymko**

The name "Ozymko" has an interesting origin and structure. It is formed from the substantive-forming suffix "-ok" (less commonly "-ko") of the adjective "ozimy," which means "a being born just before winter," "a plant sown in winter," or "a young bull" (source: Pipash-Halas, 124; Redko, 176).

At the same time, in the Polish language, there exists the appellative "ozymek," which is used to mean "a small village" (source: Rymut II, 192). In the territory of Ukraine, the name "Ozymko" was recorded only in 1787 in Lemkivshchyna (source: YM). The patronymic name of a Bilsko peasant Volos’ Ozymko-vich is found in documents from 1506 (source: Tup 677).

In Russia and Poland, during this period, anthroponyms "Ozim" and "Ozymko" were also used, originating from the root "Zim" (source: Tup 343; Ves 229). Additionally, Polish sources record anthroponyms from 1458: "Jocobus Ozimek" and "Michaelis Ozymek" (source: SSNO IV, 164).
