The Slavic feminine personal name Ozima originated from the Old Slavic adjective "ozimъ," which means 'winter-sown' or 'born just before winter.' The name Ozima has been recorded since 1689 among serfs in the village of Barbeshit in Maramureș (Belay, 124). In subsequent years, the personal name primarily functioned as a surname. For example, in 1773, a serf named Azima was noted in the village of Khorvatyk (Pe Pred, 323); in 1778, a serf named Iwan Azima was mentioned in the village of Ortutova (Marsina, 87); and in 1787, the surname Ozimka was recorded in the village of Skladysté in Lemkivshchyna (Krasovsky, 113).The feminine personal names Ozima and Ozimka, as well as the masculine names Ozim or Ozimko, indicate usage not only in Ukrainian (X - D, 163) but also in Belarusian (Bir, 18), Russian (Tup, 343; Ves, 299), and Polish onomastics (SSNO IV, 164).
