Olovinka

Dictionary meaning

The name Olovynka is likely a phonetically modified form of the word "olov'yana," which means "tin mace." The first documented mention of this name dates back to the year 1458, when the phrase "viera pana Olovenki" was recorded in Suceava (Dictionary of Suceava, Part II, page 82). Additionally, the anthroponym Ołowiany was recorded in 1413 (Dictionary of Old Names, Part IV, Number 1, page 124), and the name Olovynka was mentioned among the inhabitants of monasteries in the Sofia region in 1552 (Okiz, page 116). Regarding the name Olovyanyets, it is formed using the suffix -ets from the name of the light metal – tin, specifically from the adjective "olovyany." In 1288, this name was assigned to a boyar, who belonged to the Volodymyr and Brest principalities, Volodymyr Vasilyovych. He, along with Olovyanyets, was sent to Prince Mstyslav Danilovych in Lutsk and Lubny (Kupch, page 308). Furthermore, the personal name Ołowiany was recorded among the Poles in 1402 (SSNO IV, page 124).
