Myr

Dictionary meaning

The name Myr originated from the truncation of one of the the two-root Slavic names, such as Mironeh, Mirovy, Skoromyr, Tvorimir, where the component -mир- initially meant 'glory' and later came to mean 'peace' (Svob 79). It is recorded among the Cossacks of the Poltava regiment of the Zaporizhian army in 1649, for example, Cossack Myr (RVZ 418), Cossack of the Uman regiment Zhadin Myra (RVZ 228), in patronymics Mirenko (RVZ 45), Mіrów (MIG II 213), in the patronymic surname of the Pereiaslav colonel in 1606 Myrovich (Tup 645), and in 1649 the Cossack of the Cherkasy regiment Oleksa Myrovych (RVZ 68). The name Myr was previously used by nearly all Slavic peoples. For example, in 1571: Myr Gamovich (Ves. 199); in 1214: Polish Mirde Sudisow (SSNO HI/3 519) and similar examples.
