The name "Mylyk" is derived from the basic Slavic name "Myl-", which means "dear, beloved," by means of the diminutive suffix "-ik." The first known written mention of this name dates back to 1649. Today, the diminutive and affectionate variant of the name "Mylyk" is used by Ukrainians in relation to the name "Myloslava." There are also historical references: a Cossack from the Bratslav regiment of the Zaporizhian Host by the surname Myshchenko who bore the name Mylyk (1649). Additionally, there are records from 1649 about the patronymic of the Cossack from the Uman regiment, Protsyk Mylychenko. The name Mys by Polish sources is also mentioned in the year 1136.
