The name Milovan originates from the passive participle "milovany," which means "beloved" or "dear." It is first mentioned in Ukrainian territories in 1630. For instance, Milovan Slystratov was a Cossack from Lebedyn (Tup 250). This name is known among Ukrainians in Serbia and Croatia. In Poland, the name Miłowan is recorded in historical sources from the years 1136, 1206, 1395, and other medieval documents (SSNO III/3 515 - 516). The name Milovan has a long tradition of usage among Serbs, Croats, and Bulgarians (Grk; Śim 232; Ilchev 334).
