The Orthodox canonical form is Makrina. It originates from the Greek Μακρίνα, formed either from μακρός ("large") or from the Roman cognomen Macrinus, Macrina (which itself is derived from another cognomen, Macer — "lean"). The colloquial form Mokryna likely emerged under the influence of the adjective "wet" — Mokryna (the feast day of Saint Makrina) was considered a precursor to autumn.
