The name 'Losyk' is a diminutive and affectionate variant of the name of a large animal from the deer family — the moose, which has broad, branching antlers. In our archive, there is only one recorded instance of this name — a Cossack of the Kaniv Regiment from 1649 named Losyk Shavulenko. Today, the surnames Lось, Losyk, and Losenko are not uncommon in Ukraine.
