Name «Lopukh»

The personal name "Lopukh" originates from the appellative meaning 'a type of broadleaf weed.' In its function as a proper name, this term has been used among Ukrainians quite rarely. For instance, in the description of the Mozir Castle from 1552, "Lopukh Telyatych" is mentioned (OVZ 626). More often, "Lopukh" has been used in the form of nicknames and patronymics. For example, in 1565, the patronymic "Lopuchowicz" was recorded (OKZR I 207), and in 1649, a Cossack named Steczko Lopukh is mentioned (RVZ 49).
