Leshko

Dictionary meaning

The name Letko could have originated in two ways: a) either from the Slavic name Leh, which is a component of the name Lъstislav, or b) from the calendar name Lesъ, Olesko, which corresponds to the names Oleksа or Oleksandr. There were also attempts to derive the name Letko from the Polish Leszek, linking it to the ethnonyms lyakh, lech, and Pole. The earliest records of the name Letko date back to the Varadin registers of 1219, specifically the entry "Lescu impetitor" from the Bihor County. In 1580, in the Lemko village of Odrehova, peasants "Makukh Letko and Oleshko" are mentioned. In the early 17th century, the name Letko appears several times in the same village, for example, Letko Markiv, Letko Paschat, Letko Melnik. In 1648, the entry "Lesko Danko" was recorded in the village of Golubine. The name Letko is also mentioned in the Register of the Zaporozhian Army in 1649. An entry from 1700 in the village of Blazhiv also contains the name Letko Ivanov.Today, in the Carpathians, particularly in the western regions of Transcarpathia, surnames like Letka, Letko, Letkovych, Letkulich, Leschak, Leschytin, and others, which originate from the names Lesko and Lesk, are popular. However, it is difficult to provide a definitive etymology for the name Letko. This name is also quite common in Poland, notably Letko Bilyi - the Sandomierz and Cracow prince.
