Name «Kumko»

The name 'Kumko' is a rare Ukrainian name of a colloquial type. It is derived from the word 'kum', which means 'godfather of a child', using the diminutive suffix '-ko'. The name was mentioned in documents from 1649, referring to a Cossack from the Chyhyryn regiment named Kumko Staryi. This name root is also associated with the old name of the Transcarpathian village Kum'yata (now officially named V. Kom'yati), which first appeared in local documents in 1345.
