The Ukrainian family name "Kulyk" has at least two etymological interpretations: a) from the name of the wetland bird "kulyk"; b) from the word "kul" - a sheaf of threshed rye or wheat, "a bunch of reeds" with the suffix -ik. The earliest recorded instances of the name "Kulyk" date back to the 17th century, specifically between 1612 and 1699. For example, in 1648, a person named Kulyi Petro from the village of Pidpolozzia was recorded. The oldest references to the name "Kulyk" as a personal name appear in 1565 (Nгіпіес Kulik) and in 1668 (Kulyk Ivan from the village of Trostianets).
