Kremin

Dictionary meaning

The name "Kremin" originates from the name of the mineral flint. In Bulgarian, similar to the name "Otsil," it serves as a wish name, expressing the will of the parents: "may he/she be steadfast in character!" (Kovachev 290). The first Ukrainian records of the name date back to the 15th century. For instance, in 1491, it is mentioned: "and his sister Dragot, Kreменеи Tцине" - in the city of Suceava (SSUM I 521). Later, the anthroponym "Kremin" also began to function as a surname. For example, in 1715, a serf named Danilo Kremin is documented from the village of Sukha in the Irshav region (Belay 202) and Kremin in Chernihiv region (Redko 536).
