Name «Kopot»

The name Kopot has a nickname origin and likely comes from the dialectal word "kopot," which means 'soot.' This nickname could have been given to children due to the dark color of their skin. The earliest mentions of this name date back to the 16th century. For example, in 1552 we find Bohdan Kopoty, a boyar from Ostrog (Archives of YUZR, Volume VII/I, page 597). At that time, the name was predominantly popular in the southern regions of Belarus bordering Ukraine. Another mention is Kopot Prykhodko from the city of Mozyr (OMZ, Volume VII/1627), as well as Kopot Ostapovich, who was recorded in 1528 (Bir, page 182). In 1649, Cossack Danilo Kopot from the Cherkasy regiment also bore this name (RVZ, page 77).
