Khot

Dictionary meaning

The name Khot originated from the formation of two main names, such as Khotimir, Khotislav, or Dobrokhot. In these names, the root "khot-" is used, which comes from the verb "khotity," meaning "to wish" or "to desire." In Ukraine, the name Khot has been recorded since the time when patronymic forms were used, that is, names indicating the father. For example, in 1170, a warrior named Kosnyatin Khotovych is recorded (Tup 865), in 1137, a boyar named Hryhoriy Khotovych, who served Prince Hlib Yuriyovych, is mentioned (LR 297,308,492), and in 1552, a known peasant named Stanko Khotevych from Lutsk is documented (Arkh YZR VII/1 182). This name was also common in Novgorod, where in 1228, Khot Stanimirovych is mentioned, as well as variants Khotov, Khotovych (Skulina II 154). The name Khot can also be found outside of Ukraine, particularly in Poland (SSN0 I 335) and the Czech Republic (Svob 270).
