Name «Khira»

The name "Khira" is probably derived from the root "khir-" or "khyr-", from which both anthroponyms (human names) and toponyms (place names) were formed. For example, there is a village called Khyriv near Lviv and a village named Khirovo in Moldova. However, the origin of the name remains disputed. There are suggestions that the name may not be Slavic but rather originate from the Greek name Ischiros, which sounds similar to the word "strong," "mighty," or "brave." Another version pertains to the rare calendar name of Greek origin — Khera.However, it is most likely that the name "Khira" comes from the appellative "khira," which translates to "disease," and is related to the verb "khyrity," meaning "to be weak."The first mention of the name "Khira" dates back to the 16th century. For instance, in 1535, Khira Ivashkov was mentioned as a participant in a court case. In 1539, the name "Khѣra" was also recorded in Russia, and in 1412, its related name "Chyrzyna" was mentioned in Poland. The greatest number of recorded instances of the name "Khira" is found in the Eastern Carpathians from the 17th to the 20th centuries. For example, Chira Lazar from the village of Slatynka is mentioned in 1605.
