Name «Kanish»

The personal name Kanish is recorded in Ukrainian-language sources only once, in the form of Kanisz, dated 1448 (AGZ XIX 2078). It is likely a truncated-suffix formation from Old Czech compounds of the model Kanibor, Kanimir, or Polish Kanimil, Kanimir (Mal Bud 90), in which the prepositional component "Kapi-" expressed the meaning of the Old Serbian verb "kani-ti" meaning 'to ask, to invite.' It is also worth noting the ancient name of the field Kanat, which appears in the cadastre of the village of Baranyntsi in the Uzhhorod region.
