Hrymailo is likely a later Ukrainian variation of the personal name Hrymal, represented in Ukrainian and Polish medieval written sources. For example, in 1500, the patronymic "from pana Nemiry Hrymaylowycz" was mentioned in the village of Tryshy near the city of Brest. The emergence of the phoneme /y/ in the name could have arisen by analogy to such verbal-derived nouns as Ukrainian nouns of the type kupaylo, nedbaylo.
