The name Hrydko has medieval East Slavic origins. It is derived from the Old Russian (genetically Varangian) word "hryдь," which means "warrior," "princely bodyguard," "lower elite of the princely retinue," "guard of the prince." In Ukraine, the name Hrydko has been recorded from the 14th century to the end of the 16th century. Notable records include: in 1392, "poruchilis knyaz... za Hrydka za Kostiantynovych" ("the prince entrusted... to Hrydko Kostiantynovych"); in 1478 - "Hrydko a Daniło Starczyczy" in the city of Lublin; in 1481 - the patronymic "Ivashko Hrydkovych" from the village of Kopyl; in 1522 - Hrydko Lepyakhin, Hrydko Porshyn, Hrydko Kolesnyk in the city of Kyiv; in 1595 - "Trohym Pashkevych has four sons: Denys, Senko, Myron, Hrydko;" in 1649 - Cossack Sydko Hrydkovych from the Cherkasy regiment.In the 16th century, the name Hrydko was also encountered on the Belarusian-Ukrainian ethnic border in the city of Mozyr. Notably, there are recorded names such as Hrydko Pryhozhi, Hrydko Sechanыy, Hrydko Hrydzivych, and Hrydko Hrydzetsvich. According to M. Viril, among Belarusians, the names Hrydya and Hrydko correspond to the name Hryhorii (Gregory), Hryshka.
