The name 'Hryb' originates from the name of a non-chlorophyllous plant - the fungus (Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language II, page 165). The dictionary also mentions that in the city of Ostrog lived the son of Ivieshenievich with the surname Hryb (Dictionary of Modern Ukrainian Language, page 262). In the Kyiv region, three Cossacks are recorded under the surname 'Hryb': Lavryn Hryb, Hryshka Hryb, and Tryshka Hryb (Tuploev, page 119).
